New Delhi India

A new place to be

Whether you are looking for a meditation retreat or looking to enter the Bollywood atmosphere, New Delhi is your answer. With the second largest metropolitan population (Mumbai being the first), the city is teeming with a unique clash of historical and cosmopolitan, religious and chic, humble and bustling. At the city’s center you will no doubt be stunned by the architectural feats beheld by the largest mosque in India, Jama Masjid. Turn around and across the street you will find the Red Fort, once a British military camp and outpost, now a symbol of independence. Visit by evening and you will see a colorful show of lights and sounds, ever increasing your awe with the subcontinent.

If the sights are not enough, be prepared for the food. Very different from European cuisine, New Delhi opens your taste buds with the exciting mix of spices and entrées. During the summer, cool yourself down with a mango lassi after a meal of tandoori chicken. There are many streetside vendors that sell fresh fruit, be sure to pick up large juicy mangos to sweeten your midday.

As for holidays, New Delhi is caulk full. If you are visiting Delhi in late autumn, be sure to research the days on which Diwali fall, it is generally around September to October. If visiting in the spring, again do some research beforehand to find the days of Holi, a colorful religious holiday celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs, among others.

Finally, when leaving for India be prepared to be awed, amused, and frazzled at times, but no doubt this city is sure to rouse your spirit. For departure considers the words of Max Mueller, “If I were asked what sky the human mind has most fully developed some of its choicest gifts, has most deeply pondered on the greatest problems on life and has found solutions, I should point to India.”
