Portugal spread across hillsides
Colourful cityscape of Lisbon
The capital and largest city of Portugal, Lisbon is a lovely destination. With friendly people, it is considered one of the top places to visit in Europe. It's one of the oldest cities in the world and an important economic, mediatic, artistic and financial hub in the continent. Having two UNESCO Heritage sites, the Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery, it was considered the European Capital of Culture in 1994.
Like many other cities, more famously Rome, Lisbon was built on seven hills. The city has many beautiful attractions, and maybe the most impressive is the Cristo Rei, a similar statue to the one in Rio de Janeiro, standing over 100 metres by the side of the river Tejo. The view from there is amazing. Lisbon has many funiculars, some of them very ancient, and it's worth to visit them.
The architecture in the city also doesn't fall short in here, with the Castelo de Sao Jorge, the Ponte 25 de Abril, Ponte Vasco da Gama and the Aqueduto das Aguas Livres. There are many particular districts that will offer different vibes and utilities to your trip. On Rossio, the main square in Lisbon, locals usually meet, and it's a must to see for a traveller. The Principe Real is a trendy district with shops, and the Chiado district will offer good nightlife and stunning views.
There are many good museums in the city, that can give an understanding of the glorious history of the country and a look on its marvelous art. The Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga has an impressive national art collection, together with paintings by famous artists and artifacts of Portuguese contact with Africa and America.
Lisbon has some very relaxing and chilling parks, including an Oceanarium, zoo, botanical gardens and others, what allows you to give a break of the cosmopolitan activity. This city has a huge historic importance, and is a worth to visit if you have the chance. Lisbon is going surprise you in the best way!
