Paris, France
One of the oldest fairs in Paris and in the world, The Foire Saint-Germain is a delightful street fair that has been held since Medieval times. Founded in 1176, the fair has become a large part of Paris’ cultural and artistic life. During June and through to the 5th of July, it takes place at the Saint- Sulpice square and surrounding areas. They have hundreds of events and attractions, with everything from concerts and exhibitions to free theatre, poetry and pottery. Although there have been changes made over the years, organizers try to hold onto the old traditions, such as: an antique- dealer’s fair, a poetry market, a book-lover’s market, ceramics day and the theatre and theatrical publishing fair. The fair isn’t just exhibits, however. Over a hundred different performances will take place around the Saint-Germain Auditorium, the Saint Sulpice square and church, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, Odeon, Mabillon and Saint Sulpice. At this year’s fair, highlights will include the Salon de la Culture (cultural fair) and the Nuit de la Photographie Contemporaine (modern photography night).
