Bastille Day 14 July, 2009

France
Bastille Day, a national holiday in France, takes place every year on July 14th. It commemorates the storming of the Bastille Prison which took place July 14, 1789. At the time, the peasants were living in very poor conditions and decided to converge upon the prison, freeing political prisoners who could become their leaders. Today, it is France’s most important and perhaps well-known national holiday.

Festivities are held in the morning on the 14th of July, on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris as well as throughout the rest of the city. Parades are complete with cadets and troops marching by and in the evening, everything comes to life with large and spectacular fireworks shows.
