L’isola del Cinema or Cinema Island is the fantastic and exciting open-air summer festival that takes place in Rome, on Tibertina Island. There are many activities, previews and events which take place at the festival. This year marks the festival’s 15th anniversary and the festivites take place all summer, finishing on August 30.The festival takes place right along the Tevere River, an beautiful and romantic location especially in the evening. The Ponte Rotto (bridge) connects the island to the mainland and is illuminated, making the whole area seem a large film set. There are many booths nearby which sell everything from used books about cinema to t-shirts and jewelry.
There is lots of music and dancing, various fashion shows, and wonderful food and wine tastings, as well. The event gives visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the Italian culture and the country’s past, highlighting and screening films from the 1950s with actors such as Marcello Mastroianni and films by Federico Fellini. This year the festival will be dedicated to Fellini’s infamous “La Dolce Vita”, 50 years after it was created. There will be many events to help celebrate the film, such as meetings with authors, various exhibitions and “Born on the Tiber Island”, an event dedicated to those born on the Roman island.
