Tokyo 13 – 27 Sep 2009
The greatest Sumo wrestlers in both Japan and in the world come together in September at the Ryogoki Kokugikan Sumo Hall for the September Basho, one of the year’s six Grand Tournaments. Sumo is one of the most popular sports in Japan, known for it’s legend, ceremony and history. To an outsider, the sport of Sumo could seem like a battle for power or strength, but Sumo has over 70 different forms and manoeuvres and it is only when these are all mastered that a wrestler stands a chance at winning and becoming a champion. If you should go to see the men wrestle, the best seats are those situated closest to the dohyo (the ring), yet these are very difficult to find as they are popular seats among fans. The large arena provides many seating alternatives, ranging from simple cushions in the balcony to box seats in the Kokugikan at the back. Tickets can be purchased both in advance or on the day of the match.
