The Old Town Christmas Market is the most famous, traditional and oldest Christmas market in all of Stockholm.With Christmas just around the corner, if you are looking for something different to do this Yule time, a visit to Stockholm Sweden, could be just for you!
The markets themselves are located in the heart of the Old Town Galma Stan at Stortorget Square very close to the Royal Palace. This market tradition is so old in fact it dates back to the 1520’s, when the modern Sweden was founded by King Gustav Vasa.
Here you will find food glorious food in all forms of delicious local Swedish Christmas treats and sweets, plus you must try their smoked sausages, reindeer and elk meat, other delicacies include glogg a locally produced mulled wine.
Plus there is a huge range of Swedish handicrafts and decorative arts, as you wander around Stockholm’s oldest neighborhood, on the old cobble stoned streets, around the market and its picturesque neighborhood, which also features some of the best restaurants and museums in the area.
Visit Livrustkammaren which is the Royal Armoury or the Skattkammaren otherwise known as the Royal Treasury and don’t miss the Changing of the Guards in the Outer Courtyard and take a guided tour of the city for those that love their history!
Gamla Stan is also home to Nobelmuseet or the Nobel Museum and the Riddarhuset which is the House of Nobility.
Do the gorgeous walk from Gamla Stan, to the picturesque street, Fjallgatan, over in the Sodermalm district, where you will capture some stunning views across the city, and maybe finish off your adventure with a coffee at Fafangan, a beautiful historical cafe and lookout point.
