Cherry Town
When most of us, Europeans, are hiding the summer close to the deepest corner in the wardrobe , and taking the heavy ones to escape from the cold, preparing for Christmas, South Africans have cherry time, Ficksburg produces more than 500 tons of cherries, representing around 95% of the South African harvest. This year it will be the 45th anniversary, every year on the third week of November all the town comes together to have fun with this delicious fruit!Ficksburg is known around the country as a cherry town, it’s the same name, if you say Cherry Town everyone knows you’re talking about the Ficksburg, and the cherry festival is the oldest crop event. But don’t think it’s some simple fruit festival , where you can eat only cherries, annually there is well known South African artist as live entertainment and the festival is hosted by national celebrity. The cherry festival includes cherry tours, a golf classic, half marathon, cherry product competitions,one of them is special fun, spiting the cherry bone , equestrian events and beer fests .
There will be also goose-plucking, wine and liqueur-tasting, all kind of cooking with cherries of course, cocktail-making, all the perfume and essential oils will be available to buy or taste, and yes, wedding planning, if you love your garden, than you will be interested in herb planting and care. Also carnival parade and fireworks at the end of the festival,South Africans know how to celebrate and to have fun out of simple, delicious fruit.
