Mountains, desert and coast
Is it sunny weather that you want? Sandy paths, colourful streets, narrow and crowded streets? Escape from the boring well known western culture and give a chance to an exotic and unknown place that is Marrakech. Forget all of those cliche destinations and try something new. Marrakech is not the capital, nor the largest city in Morocco, but it’s the most visited and most interesting. The name of the city is originated from the words “mur (n) akush”, what means “Land of God” in Berber. Placed near the Sahara and the foothills of the Atlas mountains, so you can expect some adventurous trips to the countryside. The best first thing to do in the city is to dive into the local culture, and the best place to do it is in the markets, or Souks, where you can find and buy basically anything, from spices to shoes and clothes, and where you can get in touch with the true daily life.
The largest mosque in the city, the Koutoubia Mosque is the main landmark, is ornate with a tower and decorative arches, has a big square with gardens, and stands in the Medina quarter of the city, which you should also spend some time visiting. The main square in the Medina is the Djemaa El-Fna, that’s surrounded by bazaars and narrow streets, with snake charmers, acrobats and musicians.
Take a time to visit the Saadian Tombs, untouched for hundreds of years, and becoming a major attraction because of their decoration and beauty. Take a camel ride on the Palmeraie, a huge oasis on the outskirts of the city, with palms and hotels, where you can have a time to rest from the hush of the city centre.
A must to do is enjoying a hammam, from the touristic ones to the ones more frequented by the locals. Some will have massage included, private hammams for couples, only for women and others.
