The world’s most densely populated city – Tokyo features everything from brightly-lit entertainment districts to quiet gardens. Though the city has excellent public transportation systems, you are always welcome to bring comfortable shoes and hit the streets. It may not be as aesthetically pleasing as other cities of the world, but Tokyo’s landscape is a demonstration of a city constantly reforming and refining of itself after constant collapse and rebuilding. Effortlessly blending the old and the new, Tokyo is a city that defies definition.

The Imperial Palace is one of the most visited places in whole Japan. Before it became known as Tokyo, the city was called Edo and had as its center an impenetrable fortress. The Imperial Palace is home to the emperor and his family and much of the palace grounds are closed to the public. Although only the East Gardens of the palace are open to the public, their beauty and tranquility make this site worth a visit. The castle is surrounded by moats and massive stone walls, and is just a short walk from the main Tokyo rail station.

Mount Fuji’s near picture-postcard peak is one of the most beautiful sights mother nature has given to the city. Mount Fuji’s exceptionally symmetrical cone is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art. A sacred volcano imbued with a living spirit, Mt Fuji can be climbed from the 1st of July until the 31st of August. If you want to try out your physical skills, the mountain is a great challenge. But if you don’t feel like climbing, the nearby Hakone National Park and its many natural hot springs are a perfect way to relax.

Sumo is a unique sport in that everyone knows of it, but hardly anyone outside Japan understands its rules. The sport requires two sumo wrestlers to battle each other inside a four and a half metre circle. Points are scored each time a wrestler is thrown outside of the perimetre by the other contestant. Sumo has over 70 different forms and manoeuvres. If you want to understand this particular sport better, The Sumo Wrestling Museum is next to the Kokugikan Sumo Wrestling Stadium. The museum exhibits pictures of the all-time greats and various bits.

All in all, Tokyo is a particular city. It is a marvelous mix of modern living and old-fashioned manners, slick high-tech gadgets and cartoon mascots. Tokyo, like many other Asian capitals, is home to shopping mayhem. It is said that modern Japan is a contrast of the old and the new.
