San Francisco’s unique botanical garden inspires visitors with the extraordinary diversity of rare and unusual plants that can be grown in coastal California. Through its programs and displays, the Garden celebrates the bond between people and plants, and instills a deeper understanding of the necessity to conserve Earth’s biological diversity. The library is open Monday-Sunday 10:00am-4:00pm but closed on major holidays. The bookstore is open Monday-Friday 10:00am-4:00pm. The San Francisco Center for the Book is devoted to teaching the many arts and crafts that go into making books by hand. We introduce and foster the joys of books and bookmaking-their history, artistry, continuing presence in our culture and their enduring importance as a medium of self-expression. We provide both a home for Bay Area book artists and a place where the wider community can discover book arts. Everyone is welcome here, experienced practitioners and newcomers alike. Our scores of workshops foster learning at all levels: from introductory classes to yearlong courses, from traditional bookbinding to cutting-edge printing techniques to experimental book forms. There’s always an exhibition up at the Center, designed to inform and delight visitors. Free public programs abound, too, from poetry readings, to book signings, to gallery talks. GLBT Historical Society

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender Historical Society (GLBTHS) collects, preserves, and interprets the history of GLBT people and the communities that support them. The archives of the GLBTHS is one of the world’s largest collections of primary source materials about GLBT history. Filmmakers, academics, journalists, students, and others use the archives to craft truthful and inspiring representations of GLBT people. The professionally-staffed archives and reading room are open to GLBTHS members Tuesday through Friday, 1:00pm-5:00pm and to the general public on Saturday, 1:00pm-5:00pm The GLBTHS is a community-supported, 501c3. Aquarium: Underwater Planet

On display are representatives from three distinct aquatic communities. Each species of fish plays a vital role within its habitat while maintaining individual characteristics to ensure its survival. As we learn more about the under water planet, we recognize its importance to the larger environment. Presented in conjunction with the Steinhart Aquarium, California Academy of Sciences, as part of its ongoing commitment to education. San Francisco Airport Museums

San Francisco is the only airport in the U.S. to feature an accredited museum on the terminal premises. The museum opened in 2000 with the opening of the new international terminal. San Francisco Airport Museums was established to create exhibitions that would humanize the airport environment and create an ambience in the airport that reflects the sophistication and cultural diversity of the City and County of San Francisco and the entire Bay Area. Pier 39 is San Francisco’s top attraction, a festival marketplace with more than 110 stores, 13 full-service restaurants with bay views and numerous fun-filled attractions. Pier 39’s two-level design complements one of San Francisco’s most unique shopping districts, featuring everything from NFL merchandise to jewelry and imported chocolates. National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi

Located in the heart of San Francisco’s historic North Beach district, Saint Francis of Assisi Church today continues to build upon its historical mission. No longer a parish, the church has become the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi and as such bears witness to Christ within the beautiful city named for the poor troubadour of God. The Shrine Church, a place of sanctity, beauty, and quiet, rejoices in its beautiful architecture, colorful murals and stained-glass windows, and holy relics of the Franciscan saints Francis and Clare of Assisi and Anthony of Padua.
