Edinburgh Summer Hostels

August’s Fringe Festival

Edinburgh’s big event of the summer is, of course, August’s Fringe Festival, but that doesn’t mean that the city doesn’t have much more to offer in the run up to August. The 62nd Edinburgh International Film Festival got off to a flying start on June 18th with the international premiere of one of Hollywood’s hottest new releases, Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller’s ‘The Edge of Love’. Much more is in store throughout the duration of the festival, which runs until June 29th. Expect a true international flavour here-29 countries will be represented across the 142 films on show, including the controversial Irish documentary ‘Fairytale of Kathmandu’, and France’s hotly anticipated ‘Summer Hours ï´¾L’Heure d’Eté﴿’. The official website, www.edfilmfest.org.uk, has full information on film schedules, prices, booking info and more.

Also upcoming in one of the backpacker’s most loved cities is the annual Airshow by the National Museum of Flight, taking place on July 26th. An exhilarating air display, featuring synchronised and unique aerial displays from both historic warplanes and contemporary aircrafts, as well as everything in between. Tired from craning that neck? Various demonstrations and exhibitions will also be taking place throughout the afternoon, as well as chidren’s workshops and other entertainment. The event takes place at East Fortune Airfield from 10am-5pm, and tickets can be bought at the gate. Pre-booking, however, will save some of that precious moolah so do check the NMS Airshow website, www.nms.ac.uk/airshow_home.aspx, for information on prices and the full schedule.
