Since 1863 Thanksgiving Day, presently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States. The aim of the first Thanksgiving was to celebrate and to give thanks to God and the Native Americans for helping the pilgrims survive the winter period. The harvest meal has become a symbol of cooperation and interaction between English colonists and Native Americans.Nowadays the Thanksgiving is known as the one of the most important public holidays in US and get-together of family members and friends. Thanksgiving holiday weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. The traditions of this celebration have hardly changed since the old days. Families usually have dinner that cannot be imagined without a main dish – roasted turkey and mashed potatoes with gravy. Many families begin the Thanksgiving dinner by saying grace.
In some Canada’s or US restaurants you can also find the special Thanksgiving menus. Therefore, the city guests or locals, who want to eat outside, can feel the real atmosphere of celebration and taste traditional food. The cities during the celebration time organize some thematic street or theater performances. For example, in Chicago, the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade is held. The night life lovers can always head to the clubs and bars. The night before Thanksgiving, is one of the busiest nights of the year!
