This Baltic State recently marked the 20th anniversary of independence restoration, which happened on the 11th of March, 1990. Extensive programme of events will cement Lithuania as a major centre for arts and culture projects. Welcome to the wonderful world of Lithuania. Enjoy a taste of undiscovered country.

A century of history stuffed inside small country. Lithuania was originally founded the early 13th century when two military and religious forces: the Teutonic Knights and the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, began to invade the pagan area. Lithuanians had to form a unified state in order to protect the land and local religious beliefs. Lithuania lost its independence for the first time in the late 18th century. After declaring its independence in the aftermath of World War I, the country was occupied in 1940 first by the Soviet Union then Nazi Germany. Lithuania became a full member of NATO and the European Union in spring 2004.

Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius has to offer much more than you expect. Its old town is one of the largest and most exquisite of all old towns in whole Central and Eastern Europe. The ruins of castles, fortresses, an old network of narrow streets, amazing church spires, bell towers, red tile roofs, as well as residential cellars… It is easy to get lost and fall in love with this city. Don’t miss the artists’ district of Vilnius – so called self-declared ‘independent’ Republic of Uzupis. Step into the world of history and rebirth.

If your holidays in Lithuania are planned for more than 1 night, you should definitely visit Trakai Castle. Whether covered by snow, or with leaves turning orange and red it leaves unforgettable memories and impressions for a lifetime. In ancient times it was called ‘Town on the water’, since it is entirely surrounded by chains of lakes. The geographical centre of Europe should not be missed. Here, on the area of 55ha under the open sky, more than 90 works by artists from 29 countries are displayed including famous creators of contemporary art.

Have you ever seen a dessert in the middle of Europe? If you are coming to Lithuania, you can do that! Unbelievable, but over five thousand years ago the waves and winds of the Baltic Sea drifted dunes and eventually shaped the Curonian Spit – a stripe of land which separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. Feel the power of the nature on all her glory. Experience the spirit and hospitality of the country. Join the feeling.
