The Arafura Games began in 1991 back then it was known as the Arafura Sports Festival with 1500 participants from 7 countries competing in 13 different sports.

Since then it has been held bi-annually in Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, the Games are now billed as a meeting of Sporting Neighbors and attracts competitors from all over of Australia, Asian Pacific nations and beyond.

During the last games in 2009, participation of athletes had doubled with sports men and women from more than 40 different nations, competing in 27 sports.

From these humble beginnings, the Arafura Games is now recognized around the world as one of the leading international sporting competitions and meets for emerging athletes in the Asia Pacific region. Unlike the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Word Championships these games are a developmental platform for the up and coming athletes of tomorrow.
