Portland is one of America’s most lively and cultured cities on the west coast. It is Oregon’s most populous city with a population of over 500,000 people.

The City of Portland has been referred to as one of the most environmentally friendly or “green” cities in the world. The city and the region are noted for strong land-use planning and investment in light rail. It is also known for its large number of microbreweries and microdistilleries, as well as its coffee enthusiasm.

Portland lis in the Marine west coast climate region, marked by warm, dry summers and rainy but mild winters. This climate is ideal for growing roses, and for more than a century, Portland has been known as “The City of Roses” with many rose gardens most prominently the International Rose Test Garden. It is the oldest official continuosly operated public rose test garden in the United States. Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world enjoy the sights and scents of the gardens. The garden’s spectacular views and more than 8,000 roses make is one of the city’s most notable signature landmarks. The best rose viewing months are May through September.

Portland also has several authentic Oriental gardens. The Lan Su Chinese Garden is a year-round wonder. It is an authentically built Ming Dynasty garden full of covered walkways, bridges, pavillions and a richly planted landscape that frames a picturesque lake in an urban oasis. The Lan Su hosts many events including a two-week Chinese New Year celebration and summer concerts.

Portland also hosts weekly markets that offer the cuisine from local restaurants and all sorts of arts and crafts from the local talent. The markets are an extremely popular destination for people to meet up, make friends, socialize and enjoy the great outdoors.

Portland has several reputable museums and galleries that only add to the creativity and allure of the city. The Portland Art Museum is located in the heart of downtown’s culture district amd offers an outdoor sculpture tour and family activities every Sunday. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is also located in Portland and feature five enormous halls that bring science to life with hundreds of interactive exhibits and displays.
