Irish Derby will celebrated its 146th anniversary this year. It’s the premier international race day in the Irish calendar. It dates back in 1866, the winner was colt called Selim, the race has now become the biggest single betting race in Ireland and the oldest of the five Irish Classics.

It’s a glamorous event, attended by local and international celebrities and royalty, a Group I flat race open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies, and run over a distance of one mile and four furlongs. A crowd of over 45,000 people descends on the Curragh for There are consumed large quantities of champagne, wine, salmon and afternoon tea in the catering marquees.

There also will be a veritable parade of high fashion, with women in particular vying to outdo each other in the fashion stakes. Although the Irish Derby is less formal and strict than the English races like Epsom and Ascot. The dress code is smart and casual, it’s requested for everyone entering the Premier Level and ‘appropriate attire’ is requested at all times. The Irish Derby is the race everyone wants to win.

It is run over 1½ mile’s at the Curragh racecourse and takes place on June 27th, which is the final day of the three day Irish Derby Festival. The Irish Derby has been dominated by Irish horses over recent years, winning 13 of the last16 renewals. They are left with 11 Irish Derby Runners after the final declarations for the race and no one is surprised about seeing dominating Aiden O’Brien and his Ballydoyle yard, who both hold strong hands in the race at the moment.

The Irish Derby is the second biggest betting race after the Irish Grand National. The tradition is that virtually every household have some sort of bet on the race.
