The main market is at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, and also smaller ones everywhere in the town, usually open from 9am until 7pm.
You will find everything there, rows of brightly decorated wooden huts, selling Czech handicrafts, hot food such as a corn on the cob, sausages and local specialties and of course warm drinks, Bohemian Crystal, wooden toys, scented candles, hand-made jewelery, ceramic mugs, hats, scarves, traditional puppets and Christmas tree ornaments. If the shopping is outdoor, its so much nicer to have a hot wine in your hand while running through the stalls. The markets usually start four Saturdays before Christmas Eve and run until the beginning of January, being open every day of the week.
The Christmas atmosphere is there most when it’s getting dark, and all the markets are lightened up, making a real Christmas feeling in everyone hearts. But, its not all just about the shopping, it can be a nice run away from the daily rush and the stress that unfortunately Christmas brings along, you can take your family out and enjoy some traditional foods being made, particularly pastries, and in the Old Town Square children can stroke sheep, goats and a donkey.
They will be happy to see the Bethlehem scene, the wooden stable with Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus and the Three Kings. And the most beautiful thing in Prague is the Christmas tree, which is shipped from the Krkonose mountains in the North of the Czech Republic. Right in the Old Town Square, with countless lights , making an spectacular view, specially after 5pm when the lights are turned on.
