This will be a short story of the oldest city on US territory and the oldest city in the continental, the amazing San Juan with it’s capital Puerto Rico, which means rich port, and it truly is rich in all senses that you can imagine.The official foundation of San Juan was back in 1493, when Christopher Columbus found it and named it after John the Baptist, “San Juan Bautista”, the actual history of this marvellous city begun long time before that. Sometime during the 1520s, confusion over the names led to a switch, the island took the name of Puerto Rico and the town became San Juan, and that’s when San Juan’s history started.
This is the real Old San Juan, which has 465 years old neighbourhood, originally conceived as a military stronghold, at the same time being very modern and spontaneous, the narrow streets are
paved with cobbles of adoquine, a blue stone cast from furnace slag, the old town itself includes more than 400 carefully restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings.
Believe it or not but thousands of tourists from all over the world, prefer to visit San Juan than any other spot in the Caribbean. You would ask why? Just before you see it with your own eyes, and everything would be clear for you, I will secure you that its gambling casinos, fine beaches, and tropical climate is more than enough to call it the best of all Caribbean.
To fully enjoy the majestic city San Juan, you will need at least 2 full days, must see are , Castillo San Felipe de Morro, which is a national historic site, that raises majestically over the main entrance to San Juan Bay, with tunnels, barracks and entry boxes called ‘garitas’.
The second must see is the oldest Plaza San Jose, located on Calle San Sebastian, being surrounded by some of the oldest structures in the city and by the way one of the favorite meeting places in the town with the best locals. The east coast of the island is perfect for those who love nature, here you will have breezy beaches and a very unique rain forest, and you will definitely have to try “kioskos” that serves delicious local specialities.
