Unusual holiday
Bored of usual cultural-historical Italian holiday? It’s time to change.
If you are in Taormina, you cannot miss an excursion on the Etna.
Etna is the highest active vulcano in Europe, over 3000 mts, and it became in June Unesco heritage; The vulcano is really impressive, very active most of the time with smokes and lava eruptions and it inspired several myths and legends in all eras.
Going to Etna by yourself looks tiring, complicated and even quite expensive: from Taormina you are supposed to catch a bus early morning at 6.30 to Catania. Then from Catania station you’ll have just one option in the whole day to catch another local bus that takes ages to reach Rifugio Sapienza on the Etna. Rifugio Sapienza is nothing worthy, you just get till 1900 mts so from there you need to catch the cable car to the top and from there you have panorama, but you have no idea of what are you looking at.
From Taormina a new association exists from summer 2013 called Etna People. Prices are reasonable, lunch, trekking shoes and all the equipment is included; group is small, maximum 8 people per guide and during your trip on Etna it’s ease to familiarized with other members.
Excursion cosists on different stops on the Etna: a panoramic point of view on the Bove Valley, a visit inside of the lava caves (they will provide to you torches and helmets), finally a soft trekking of around 2 hours. The group will stop for lunch – typical Sicilian starters and some pasta will be offered, and you will get the chance of wine tasting of 4 different bottles of wine from the Etna. Then the group will move on, having a look on the Alcantara Gorges, a cold river passing between an amazing shaped canyon.
