The new law was accepted on the 26th of May, 2010. The municipality of Rome has decided to forbid the pub-crawls till the 31st of December, 2010. Various sanctions will be used to make the owners of the bars and organizers of the pub-crawls to respect the law of prohibition. The authorities of the eternal city are aiming to eliminate the alcoholism of the tourists in the central areas of Rome. In addition, two other regulations limiting noise and littering were issued almost at the same time.There will be prohibited the pub-crawling tours organized with a purpose to take the groups of tourists to drink in the pubs of the center passing from a one to the other one. The City of Rome has issued a regulation, in effect until December 31, 2010, that forbids not only the organization of pub crawls, but also its publicity via Internet or by other means. Bars that host pub crawls will be closed for between three and 60 days and, in case of repeat offenses, their licenses will be withdrawn.
There are more than one death related with pub-crawls in the past years. The most famous cases happened in 2009. Italian media published pictures showing the body of the 20-year-old wearing a yellow T-shirt with a slogan advertising a Roman pub crawl. The Australian guy had been walking along the edge of a bridge after winning a beer-drinking competition at the first pub he visited that day. The tragedy happened as Italy scrambled to tackle a growing binge-drinking problem.
