Afrikaburn 27th April 2nd May
AfrikaBurn is an annual festival of arts, freedom of expression, and complete non-commercial communal living! It is a 6 day festival of mind-blowing artistic talent with the goal of creating a temporary sustainable community through collaborative art projects. It is a society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers. It takes place every year at a different time on a very isolated farm called Stonehenge adjacent to the Tankwa Karoo National Park. AfrikaBurn began in 2007 but it is based on the Burning Man festival thats takes place every year in Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, which dates back to 1986.There is absolutely nothing for sale- no vendors and no advertising- at this event. It is world of trade and gift giving. AfrikaBurn is all about the idea of giving without recieving. The event survives on the gift economy, the aim being real social interaction. The festival is a blank canvas in which the participants can project any artistic medium their hearts desire. It is an opportunity to reinvent and reshape yourself and the world, even if only for 6 days. This event is open to anyone and everyone who wants to experience somethig out of the ordinary and truly unique! To become a participant you seemly have to create a service to offer and share. You can bring gifts that can be heard, ate, drank, seen, climbled or burned! The community of AfrikaBurn offers a large variety of artistic installments ranging from musical performances, flame throwers, dancers, poets, jugglers and more! The creativity and imagination of AfrikaBurn will amaze you and keep you coming back for more!
This years theme is STOF- the primal mud. Stof is the Afrikaans word for dust and the Germanic word for matter. Matter being the building material of life, what makes us who we are. The theme is meant to be a base of possible connection and inspiration from which your imagination can grow.
AfrikaBurn thrives on ten principles: communal effort, participation, civic responsibility, immediacy, decommodification, gifting, leaving no trace, radical inclusion, radical self-reliance, and radical self-expression. AfrikaBurn hopes these principles can become a way of life in order to escape the mainstream commercial world. AfrikaBurn truly is a one-of-a-kind experience. If you want to get the most out of your visit to South Africa, this event must be at the top of your to-do list! You wont be dissapointed.
