Most famous of all endurance races

The first running of the Le Mans 24 hours held back in 1923 on May, on the public roads from Paris to Le Mans town. The new race caught on to such an extent that within 30 years ,in 1923, the local automobile club had set up the first 24-hour race as a one-off challenge. The original idea was to go the furthest distance over three consecutive races.
The early races were dominated by British, French, and Italian drivers, teams, and cars, with Bentley, Alfa Romeo and Bugatti being the prominent marques. In the late 1930’s the teams started running aerodynamic bodywork, reaching for faster speeds with Bugatti and Alfa Romeo. With the outbreak of World War II in late 1939, the Le Mans 24hrs race went on a ten year break.
In 1953 fter the formation of the World Sportscar Championship, Jaguar, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, and others began sending multiple cars, supported by their factories, to compete against their competitors. Unfortunately this competition would also lead to tragedy with an accident during the 1955 race. At the end of the 1960s, Ford entered the Le Mans 24hrs with their GT40s, and took a straight wins before the era of production-based cars would come to a close.
In the 21st Century the increasing costs associated with running a car in the competition saw many major automobile manufacturers review their participation, but only Audi remained competing at the Le Mans 24 hours, easily dominating the races with their R8.
