The romantic city of Verona, located in northern Italy, has more to offer than a romantic getaway for couples. It is one of the main tourist destinations in northern Italy, thanks to its artistic heritage, several annual fairs, shows, and operas that show in the Arena, the ancient amphitheatre builts by the Romans.The city is also one of the World’s Heritage Sites due to its urban structure and architecture.
The city become very popular because the famous play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare was based in Verona.
Most of Verona’s important sites are close together in the center of the city, almost encircled by the Adige River. The Verona Arena is a Roman amphitheatre which is internationally famous for the large scale opera performances given there.
One of the greatest achievements of Romanesque architecture, The Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, is also located in Verona. It’s fame rests partly on its architecture and partly upon the tradition that its crypt was the place of the marriage of Romeo and Juliet. After the church you can stroll over to Piazza Dei Signori. In the center of this elegant square wich is surrounded by Venetian buildings, a statue of a pensive Dante can be found almost always covered with pigeons.
After some pasta and vino, head to San Pietro to climb its terrace behind the Roman Theatre for views of the city. The sunset there is best for Verona. The city is great for couples or the lone traveller looking for a relaxing vacation.
