Stolen Generations in Australia
Today life has become so much easier, and we still don’t appreciate it as we should, in most of the parts of the world the war is over, and all the mad things are left behind, but it hasnt been removed from our memories..but still some countries remember those horrible times when the beloved once were taken away from them, forced to leave their families and homes.For example, Australia every year on May 26 held National Sorry Day, Australia-wide observance. On this day, all the Australians are able to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.
his day gives all of them chance to sign the Sorry Books, also writing messages, as a way of showing their commitment towards reconciliation. Stolen generations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, in this way fulfilling the recommendations from the Bringing Them Home report. Australians are doing this since 1998, which was one year after the tabling of a report about the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.
Indigenous children were forcibly separated from their families and communities since the early days of European occupation in Australia. Governments and missionaries were responsible for this forced separation. Even today every year, many school children have essay competitions, lightening candles for Indigenous Australians and so much more to remind kids nowadays what was happening before. Films that focus on the Stolen Generations may also be shown to students for discussion. These children who were removed came to be known as the Stolen Generations.
