Baroque style masterpiece
The artichoke season has started in Italy and so has arrived the fall, you will have a chance to have some of the best of everything in Rome. The weather this year is stunning, cool but sunny, no rain, get dressed and later on lose the jacket, because of temperature that goes up to twenty degrees Celsius.Chestnuts selling everywhere and people still strolling throughout the busiest and prettiest streets of Rome, Italians wrapped in huge scarves and even bigger sunglasses and tourists in flip flops and T Shirts, if you are one of them, you will get a judgmental look. Most importantly that happens today in Rome, is the reopening of the magnificent Trevi fountain, that has been under restoration for over a year. That broke hundreds of hearts, after all, Trevi is one of the top three monuments in Rome, that represents the romantic city.
Trevi fountain is the most famous and arguably also the most beautiful fountain in the city, it’s situated at the end of the Aqua Virgo, the aqueduct brings water from the Salone Springs, which is about 21 km away from Rome, it supplies the whole fountains in the historical center of Rome with water. There are many legends going on, but the most famous one says that Agrippa sent soldiers near Rome to search for a spring, they found it with a help of a young virgin, that showed the source to the soldiers.
The baroque style masterpiece was designed by Bernini and Nicola Salvi, like a monumental triumphal arch. It was built against the wall of Palazzo Poli, 20 meters wide and 26 meters high, occupying more than a half of the square. If you get closer, you will see the central figure, Neptune, god of the sea, riding a shell shaped chariot, pulled by two sea horses. Throw a coin in the fountain and make a wish!
Well, today the water will be running and the Trevi fountain will be functioning better than ever! Trevi will be refilled with a water again, the restoration work was sponsored by fashion house Fendi, the cost was 2 million euros. Enjoy the masterpiece of Bernini and Nicola Salvi !
