The Olympic flame for the XXV Winter Olympic Games Milano–Cortina 2026 will make a symbolic and celebratory stop in Rome, where it will remain for four days, bringing with it events, cultural initiatives, and public festivities dedicated to the Olympic spirit. The relay officially begins in Italy’s capital before continuing its journey north to San Siro, where the Opening Ceremony will take place on February 6, 2026.
A Historic Stop in the Capital
As tradition dictates, the flame will be ignited on November 26 in Olympia, Greece. From there, it will embark on a 12,000-kilometer journey through various countries and cities before reaching Italy. Its passage through Rome, a city deeply rooted in history and symbolism, represents a moment of national unity and celebration.
Detailed Program (December 4–7)
Arrival and Ceremonies
The torch is set to arrive in Rome on the evening of Thursday, December 4. The following morning, Friday, December 5, one of the key moments of its stay will take place: the lighting of the cauldron in Piazza del Quirinale.
Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella, together with several high-ranking authorities, will attend the ceremony. After the official lighting, the Olympic flame will remain on public display until the afternoon, giving residents and visitors the chance to experience this symbolic moment up close.
Celebrations will continue in the evening with a special concert at the Stadio dei Marmi, honoring the flame’s arrival in the Eternal City.
The Torch’s Journey Through Rome
The relay through the streets of Rome will begin on Saturday, December 6. In the morning, the flame will travel along a city route estimated at around 33 kilometers, accompanied by an official convoy. The exact route is still being finalized.
In the afternoon, the torch will arrive at Piazza del Popolo, where an open and accessible Olympic village will welcome the public with activities, entertainment, and themed events.
The Final Day in Rome
On Sunday, December 7, a day featuring traffic restrictions in the city, the flame will continue its journey toward the EUR district and subsequently to Ostia, where it will make a brief public stop. After this final Roman appearance, the flame will depart the capital.
Rome marks only the first chapter of its 63-day journey, which will culminate on February 6, 2026, when the flame enters San Siro Stadium in Milan to inaugurate the Winter Games.
