The Lochside Hostel, Loch Ness

Think a visit to the Scottish Highlands means a lonely adventure into the wilderness? Think again! With a stay at Lochside Hostel in Loch Ness you’re sure to have a social experience – with daily events, group hikes, kayak hire and more in an incredible location on the shores of Scotland’s most mythical Loch.

Stay (un)Comfortably Close to the Monster!

With its own beach just 30 metres from the nearest bunk bed, the hostel captures the scenic and epic imagination of the Scottish Highlands with none of the remoteness – although located a short distance from the major tourist spots of Drumnadrochit, Fort Augustus, Inverness and Fort William, the hostel has its own bus stop right on the doorstep with direct regular buses to all of those destinations and more, with single bus fares costing just £2.

Nessie-hunting has never been easier or more affordable.

An Easy-Going Social Atmosphere

The hostel’s large common room overlooks the water and is the perfect place for meeting fellow backpackers from all over the world. It features a free pool table, board games, an open log fire and free tea & coffee throughout the day. The hostel also has its own small shop and bar, where you can buy a local beer or something to cook in the well-equipped self-catering kitchen.

Every night, the volunteer team at the hostel puts on an event to bring people together – everything from Traditional Scottish Folk Dancing to Bonfires on the beach, pool tournaments, and more.

Explore the Best of Scotland on the Great Glen Way

The world-famous Great Glen Way Hiking Path is located just a few metres from the front door of the hostel, and the team regularly hosts group hikes around the Alltsigh Triangle route that takes you high over the Loch and returns to the hostel within 2-3 hours. Alternatively, if you’re travelling the full length of the Great Glen Way, it makes a superb stop-off point for an overnight stay between Invermoriston (1.5 hours walk) and Drumnadrochit (3 hours walk).

Comfort and Atmosphere Collide

After undergoing refurbishment in 2025, you’ll be pleased to hear that the hostel matches its easy-going social atmosphere with all the amenities you’d expect from a modern hostel – warm showers, comfortable beds, sturdy bunks, and plenty of character, with all of the rooms directly overlooking the water.

Onward Travel Made Easy

And to top it off, the buses that stop at the hostel doorstep can take you onwards to the legendary Isle of Skye, down towards the tallest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis, from Fort William, or to visit Glenfinnan Viaduct, which famously featured in the Harry Potter movies. The new £2 single bus fare scheme has made travelling the Scottish Highlands effortless and affordable for backpackers of all stripes.

With stays starting from just £21 per night this summer, and both dorm and private accommodation available, Lochside Hostel in Loch Ness is sure to be a highlight of your travels to Scotland.
