Throughout history women have been campaigning for their rights. To name a few of there attempts for starters in ancient Greece, Lysistrata started a sex strike among women (withholding sex from their mates) in order to force their husbands to end the Peloponnesian war. In France during the Revolution, women marched to Versailles demanding to be entitled to vote.



The history of Women’s Day dates back to New York in 1857, when hundreds of working women went on strike and demonstrated against low salaries, long working hours and inhuman working conditions. 35 Years later in Copenhagen, Denmark, it was decided that the anniversary day of the women’s “New York Strike” would be celebrated as International Women’s Day. On the 8th of March 1975, the UN (United Nations) officially declared the 8th of March as a day of women’s rights and world peace.



In Finland for example women received their full government rights in 1906.In the election year of 1907 nearly every political party submitted female candidates. 19 women were selected and these women became the worlds first congresswomen.



In all over the world this day is dedicated to women and they are pampered in various ways, and for reason! In many countries men remember the women of their live with flowers, chocolate and other gifts.
