Sao Paulo Art Galleries – Brazil
Looking for something to do in Sao Paulo during the quieter months of winter? There are many museums and galleries open for you to take in some culture and see some amazing works of art.

The Pinacoteca do Estado is a fantastic museum that holds a well put together collection of Brazilian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. The open plan layout and excellent lighting makes for easy viewing and a pleasurable visit, and gives you a chance to see the clear emergence of the Brazialian style which had managed to seperate itself from the European influence.

Museu de Arte Moderna de Sao Paulo is in contrast a small museum consisting of two gallery rooms. Exhibitions are held showcasing a particular artist at any one time and works will be anything from paintings, sculptues, textiles or multimedia. The museum also has a library with a good collection of various art books in a number of languages. Once you’ve been through the galleries you can take a walk in the gardens that surround the museum where the sculptural works of 28 Brazilian artists are on show.

Museu de Arte Sacra concentrates more on artifacts such as chalices, crosses and sculptures that were made to decorate churches. The Mosteiro da Luz was built in 1774 and has both portuguese and english texts available to explain the background of each work. Outside the museum is the Presepio, a miniature village containing 1600 hand painted figurines that depict life in the times of a 18th century Neapolitan. Admission is all inclusive of the museum ticket.
