Secret of Ponza island

Between Rome and Naples
Italy is one of the few countries that has an incredible gift of nature and luck, from the very beginning it was blessed with great weather and amazing landscapes, golden beaches and hundreds of cities, each different, each unique and each fulfilled with Roman monuments. It maybe sounds unfair, they have it all, they have had it all and still there, touchable , visible and more than alive. You’ve probably have seen or at least heard it all, but there’s a secret island, that only few know, they have managed to keep it that way, Italians attempt to keep island’s charm a secret. Ponza.

Somewhere between Rome and Naples, Ponza is the largest of all Pontine Islands, surrounded with blue waters, Ponza has a striking hilly landscape, with beautiful summer houses and a indescribable scenery, with some of the most breathtaking sunsets and sunrises. That all beauty is accompanied with extreme peace, you could just stare at the waters forever, it’s magic and hypnotizing. You will be one of few foreigners in there, Ponza is cheap version of Capri, or a holiday place for rich and famous to keep the low profile or also Romans , who would go there with a ferry for a weekend.

Ponza offers clean and limpid waters, you can swim and dive between the rocks and boats, main settlements are Ponza Porto, but also Le Forna which is more on North is famous. There will be great restaurants with super dining options, some bars to have an aperitivo, but don’t expect a party island, Ponza’s main appeal is its landscape and atmosphere of tranquility. You can rent a boat from the Port of Ponza and discover the underwater wrecks, with mule-tracks to wander. One of the most remarkable are the ruins of a Roman port at Santa Maria, and a Roman necropolis. You will enjoy the high cliffs on the port side, on the other end of the island, Le Forna will offer natural pools and places to truly enjoy the sunshine.

Once you are done with the beautiful coast, not that anyone ever could be done with it, get into the inland, there’s more, apart the pink flowers and wild plants scattered on the cliffs, there are mountains striking out and vine-clad hills, with only one main road snaking from the Port up through to the north of the island served with minibuses that would get you from one side to another. You will just love the peace and the scenery that Ponza has to offer, stay in one of the white North African style houses to rent and enjoy your Ponza experience, there’s nothing to regret.
