Staying in Malawi

Africa Safari

Hi,

I just got back from a marvellous trip to Malawi, Africa.

Me and my
girlfriend have been travelling around Malawi and Zambia in October 2005 for
about 4 weeks. If you are not sure where to stay or what to do in
Malawi/Zambia, we have some very good tips to share.

During the preparation
of the trip we came into contact with Kiboko Camp & Safaris. This turned out
te be an excellent company for backpackers in Malawi: good value and
backpacker prices.

So before our holiday started we had already arranged to stay at Kiboko
camp the first few nights. We thought it would be a relaxed way to start our
Africa-experience.

After landing in Lilongwe we took a taxi straight to
Kiboko camp (all taxi’s know this place). It turned out to be a very
laid-back place with different accommodations (camping, A-frames (small
private wooden “wigwams”) and small cottages: all very reasonably priced).

Also to be found at the camp: a restaurant, a bar with games, plenty of
information, internet, a nice veranda to hang out upon, warm showers, a
volleyball field and beautiful (fruit) trees and plants all around.

The
staff is friendly and the atmosphere easy-going. Restaurant food is simple,
but good; just let the staff know during the day that you want to have
dinner there in the evening. Make sure you have enough cash, as no payment
with credit cards is possible.

During our stay at the camp we signed up for one of the Kiboko safaris,
the Northern Experience. Compared to other safari companies, Kiboko is
relatively cheap and offers personal safaris in small groups with nice
accommodations and experienced local staff.

The safari was great and we can
really recommend this to you fellow backpackers.

For those of you with a bit
more to spend, Kiboko also has a nice hotel in the centre of Lilongwe, in
the Old Town next to the craft market.

All in all, we had a great time and Malawi and Zambia are really worth
visiting!
