Central Asia is a unique place like no other. You will find unique places with their own flavour. See a completely new way of life in these undiscovered places.

Tashkent

Over the last few years the Uzbek government has embarked on a major reconstruction program in the centre of the city. Roads, government buildings and parks are all being reconstructed. To the visitor, the new city looks very impressive

Bokhara

Bokhara has long been a center of carpet trading. The style of rug called “Bokhara” are actually made by the Turkoman tribes of the area and might better be labelled Turkoman rugs. Indian or Pakistani rugs may also be marketed as “Bokhara rugs” if they copy Turkoman designs. It is actually possible to visit a UNESCO site in the old town and see how the dyes for the carpets are made from natural ingredients, and also watch teams of around 2 women weave them.

Dushanbe

Massive Statue of Somoni (who the curency is named for) on Prospekt Aiani. Apparently the crown is 10 kilograms of tajik gold. Victory Park Hike to the top for a seasonal tiki-themed beer garden offering views of the city. The truly brave can take the rickety gondola. Turn left off of Rudaki at the TSUM and pass the beer factory. Fort Hissar Barter with a taxi to drive you 10km out of town to this rebuilt 13th century fort and madrassa. It was destroyed by Soviet troops in their hunt for Enver Pasha.

Bishkek

Ala-Too square is the main city square. It is the site of frequent political demonstrations and regular festivals. At night many vendors set up photograph and karaoke booths. There is also a military monument with an hourly changing of the guard. National museum sits between Ala-Too Square and the Parliament building. On the North Side is an enourmous statue of Lenin that was on the south side of the building during the Soviet Era. It is three stories, with the first two about Kyrgyz history and the top floor unchanging since the soviet era highlighting the achievments of communism. While sorely needing upkeep and renovation it harkens back to the old days. Osh Bazaar is the city’s best known food bazaar where you can buy hundreds of different products from a fresh sheep’s head to locally made korean pickled salads.
