Rome 2762 years old 21st April 2009

Celebrated over the Millennia
A celebration going strong for the last 2761 years, the anniversary of Rome’s founding on April 21st 753 BC was originally an event of small attention to the newly founded city built by Romulus. After the completion of the Rome Romulus had created what would be the capital of one of the world’s great empires, but at its beginning it had almost no citizens. To populate it he created a refuge on the surrounding hills of Celio, Aventino, Quirnale, and Campidoglio, to which a ragtag population of criminals, ex-slaves and outlaws soon decamped. However Romulus still needed women. On the 21st of August Romulus invited the surrounding country to celebrate the festival of Consus in which a series of games and celebrations would be held. During the games however Romulus and is men deviously seduced and even kidnapped many of the women attending. This event angered the Sabine king Titus Tatius, who promptly marched against Rome. Romulus was triumphant in the end and with pleads from the women of Sabine for peace. A truce was founded between the two kings who ruled together until Titus died shortly after.

Today Festivals and anniversaries in Rome have been tamed from its earlier days, but still carry the same Mediterranean passion for celebration. Each year the on the 21st celebrations and parade throughout the city crowd the streets. Traditional Roman banquets are held with Olives, figs, goat cheese, wine, eggs, pork, fish, and bread as regular foods found. The ancient Romans did not eat pasta and tomatoes; instead they found food from the farthest reaches of the empire and brought them to their table as a show of wealth and power. The day is also filled with gladiator shows, and public speeches galore from local historical societies. Of course the day is completed with magnificent fireworks, which lights up the night along the Tiber as the ancient city silhouettes the skyline.
